What it Costs

It is not cheap to train a Service Dog. Even though K9Helpers is provided discount rates, the total cost to buy, train, place and monitor each K9Helpers Service dog is about $29,000.

Including all ongoing costs, the total yearly cost of a dog is about $4,800 - and the vision of K9Helpers is that the client pays only a token amount toward this.

Benefits

There are cost benefits to Society. The Service Dog has been shown to prevent hospital visits and to reduce number of interventions by the Assertive Management Treatment Team (AMTT). Since a day of hospital treatment is estimated to cost the Province about $480, and a week of  AMTT care is estimated to be $477, it is easy to see that a service dog cost of $400/MONTH is well worth the money - in addition to the improved quality of life for the client.
